The staircase is a symbol par excellence of the connection between the earth and the heavens, the living and the dead, communication between earthly life and the divine. Be it a layman or a religious person, the staircase represents access to and passage from one state of awareness to another. It symbolizes the growing process of Man, the progressive ascent towards self-awareness. Steps along the way act as the intermediate levels towards attaining a higher truth. Illuminating Staircase adds an element of self-irony. Beyond the traditional symbolic value, it goes a step further as a staircase that also “enlightens”. S.R.

La scala, soggetto simbolico per eccellenza, rappresenta il collegamento tra terra e cielo, fra vivi e morti, la comunicazione tra il terreno e il divino. È la possibilità di accedere al cielo. Sia in ambito laico, sia in quello religioso rappresenta il passaggio da uno stato di conoscenza a un altro, il collegamento con una sfera superiore. Raffigura il processo di crescita dell’uomo, l’ascesa progressiva verso la consapevolezza del sé. E i gradini sono i livelli intermedi per arrivare a una verità superiore. Questa scala ironizza se stessa, ciò che rappresenta: é una scala “illuminante” e, nel contempo, riafferma il suo potente valore evocativo. S.R.
